Dream Dinners and Piggly Wiggly
I hope this scenario is not indicative of what would happen if you opened a meal assembly store inside of a grocery store. But, this particular location is only managing two sessions a day (not everyday) and for January 2008 they are only working on one session a day.
I can only hope they’re doing a ton of walk-in traffic because if this is the only business this is generating this was either a terrible location or meal assembly and grocery stores just don’t mix. A part time store within a full time market doesn’t seem like a good match.

Anyone have any stats on how this is goign for DD & gorcery chains like Publix?
I have no idea if it’s because they signed an agreement or they learned a lot on their first effort and think a new store will be better, but Piggly Wiggly is supposed to be opening another DD in April 2008.
There is a lot of talk about Publix and their MA attempts and I have read a lot that says they feel very strongly the blending of the two is great for consumers and for business. I haven’t seen anything about the attendance/participation and whether or not they consider the stores a success yet.
I think for a big box grocery retailer it’s just another revenue stream, suppliers, work force, space and equipment for the most part are already in place for them. It’s no different than Whole Foods becoming a “market place” where you can get groceries, sit and have a pizza, gourmet chocolates and so on…..for them it’s not really a risk cause the infrastructure is already in place, nothing ventured nothing gained …….
