Expect food prices to keep rising, industry says
WASHINGTON — Americans who dug deeper into their pockets for groceries last year will face sticker shock again this year when shopping for food, experts said Thursday.
Consumer food prices are expected to rise 3.0% to 4.0% this year after a 4.0% gain in 2007, said USDA Chief Economist Joseph Glauber at the U.S. Agriculture Department’s annual outlook conference.

He added that “overall retail food prices for 2008 to 2010 are expected to rise faster than the general inflation rate.”
“There’s going to be real food inflation in this country,” said C. Larry Pope, president and chief executive of U.S. beef processor Smithfield Foods (SFD).

I said I wouldn’t post here anymore, but as this has nothing to do with our ongoig argument, I thought I ought to if it can help anyone. One of our exes is now a broker and she sent us a message today saying that we should look for another price increase on oil this coming in April–this includes pan sprays too. she said to buy now, if you can, and save some $$. (She did not know if olive oil was affected but I would guess it is, and certainly olive blends would have to be… but it she did know it affects corn/canola/safflower/sunflower/peanut oils…) Also, the price of flour has DOUBLED in the past week and we can expect to see another DOUBLING in the next 2 months. This not only will affect flour for recipes, but also ingredients/items that contain flour (i.e. bread dough, pizza dough, etc.) So she said that if you can afford to buy more now, do it and store it. She also recomended the same for anything you use personally, like cake mixes, brownie mixes and bagged flour to hold for holiday baking! Just a heads up, Lisa
